Mrs Martineau, our fantastic Head of English, shared why 'The Firework Maker's Daughter' by Philip Pulman is one of her favourite children's books:
"This book is an amusing adventure about a girl who aspires to follow in her father's footsteps, and it is full of Pullman's trademark wit.
It tells the story of Lila, who longs to be a firework maker like her widower father. He prefers that she have a husband rather than a career, even though he brought her up inspiring her to his trade. Lila tricks her father into revealing the secret to how to make fireworks. She then bravely departs on an adventure with her to retrieve the royal sulphur from the heart of a volcano and comes face to face with Razvani, the Fire-Fiend.
I loved this book because of the amusing characters, the exciting adventure and of course Pullman's fantastic writing. I would highly recommend you give it a go!"
