news archives This week in Pre Prep

Year 1

This week in Maths we have been learning about place value. We have been looking at what each digit means in a two-digit number. We have been making numbers using place value cards and have also been using dienes to build numbers. The children are getting much more confident at identifying how many 10’s and 1’s make up a number. In our writing this week, the children have been writing about what they did over February half term. It was lovely to hear about all of the wonderful things that they have been up to! In phonics, we have been learning the tricky split i_e sound. The children could recall this sound well and are starting to remember both letters when writing the sound. In RS we started reading the Easter story. The children were very interested in the story and asked some thoughtful questions. We look forward to reading the next part of the story next week. Another busy week in 1F!

Year 2

Year 2 have had a fun first week back after half term. In English, we have been studying poetry, and looked at ‘The Magic Box’ by Kit Wright. We read and discussed the poem carefully, and thought through the imagery and visualised the ideas it gave us. In Maths, we worked on our Geometry and Position. We worked on coordinates, rotation of shapes and objects, and right angles. The class went on a ‘Right Angle Hunt’ around the classroom. In Topic, the class researched the difference between the different city states in Ancient Greece. We then focused on Athens and Sparta and sorted the main differences between the two. This week was also the Big Legal Lesson – the class used this as an opportunity to discuss why rules and laws are so important in our world, and how they link to the key British Values.

Year 3

In History, Year 3 have started their new topic of the Vikings. They began by looking at where the Vikings came from, where they raided, invaded and settled – in particular in England, Scotland and Ireland. We also looked at and began creating a timeline of Viking history in Britain.

In Maths, we have been learning about fractions of shapes and numbers. This term we will be focusing on our times tables. In English we have been writing letters to a school in Kenya. We have written all about ourselves and about what we like to do in our spare time. In Geography we have been learning about the different crops that are grown in Kenya and about the huge plantations.
