This week in Year One, we have started a new Science based topic ‘Sound and Light’. We have learnt lots about light this week and discovered different light sources that we use every day. We have watched a video to learn about day and night and we are beginning to understand when the world rotates it is day in some parts of the world and night time in other countries like Australia. In English we have been learning all about verbs. The children were very good at coming up with lots of words and we enjoyed practising some actions to help us remember these. In Art, we created our own Owl Babies sitting on a branch using sponges to create feathers. In RS we read the story ‘The Man who said Thank you’ and listed down important things in our lives that we are thankful for. In Maths we have been looking at mass. We began by exploring the words lighter and heavier, and moved onto using balance scales to weigh items using non-standard measure. Another very busy week in 1F!
This week in Maths, we have been revising the features of 2D and 3D shapes and learning about symmetry. We made shape patterns and symmetrical butterflies. In English, we have continued to study the elements of a sentence and revised different types of punctuation. We have learnt how to plan a story. We used ‘Humpty Dumpty’ as the inspiration for a story. In Topic, we finished our study of the British Isles by labelling a map to show key cities. We found out about the properties of materials and made some fun glasses. In R/S, we continued to look at stories from the Old Testament. In Design Technology we worked very hard to finish our Insey Winsey spider boxes. We made a big mess, but it was fun and we are proud of all our efforts. In Art, we made montages of all our lovely work.
In Year 3 this week we visited the Anglo Saxon village in West Stow. We wrote some wonderful recounts about our day. We have also been planning our stories for the BBC 500 word competition. We have been thinking about characters and setting the scene for our stories. In Maths we have been finding the difference between two 2 and 3 digit numbers. In RS we celebrated Chinese New Year. We cooked noodles with beansprouts and tasted prawn crackers with dipping sauce. We also made Chinese hats. In Geography we looked at the Kenyan Flag in detail and learnt about the meanings of the colours in the flag. In history we continued our research on Anglo Saxon Houses. We have also been practising our poems for verse speaking heats next week. We finished the week with a little gift from Mrs Catchpole and Mrs Popham, gold coins in Chinese envelopes, for good luck.
We are also looking forward to our Open Morning on Saturday 9th February. We will be Minecraft Coding and also competing a fun STEM activity.
